One thing I’ve discovered about new writers: most don’t realize they have to have a marketing plan in place before they pitch that first book. They’re of the mindset that they will write the book and the publishing house can market it. Wrong. These days, the author plays a critical role in getting the word out about his/her book.
If you’re the shy sort—someone who would rather hide behind his/her computer— you’ll have to break out of that shell. Be determined to help your publicist or publishing house, and be willing to do things that might make you a little uncomfortable. Things like radio interviews, online chats, blog interviews, book signings at local stores, teaching other authors, national writing events, perhaps even TV appearances.
Are you shivering in your boots as you think about these things? If so, you’re in good company. Most authors come into this publishing thing never realizing so much is expected of them. After awhile, though, it becomes comfortable and even enjoyable, particularly as you work with your publicist to come up with new and creative ways to get the word out about your book.
