Remember that old song, “To everything turn, turn, turn?” Thank goodness things are always changing in our lives. If you’re in a rough writing season—say, a winter, when everything appears to be drying up—don’t panic. Another season is coming around the bend.
In my own life, I’ve tried to teach myself how to ride out the seasons. My son-in-law has a favorite saying: “And it came to pass...” I’ve adopted that as a writing motto.
This too shall pass.
Every rough season comes to an end. By the same token, the wonderful seasons—say, the ones where editors are head over heels in love with you and your stories—often end, as well. You’re likely to face many disappointments along the way.
So, how do you stay on top of the ever-changing seasons? Go with the flow. Be flexible. Be willing to slant and re-slant ideas. Teach yourself to refocus and regroup. Most of all, don’t panic. “To everything turn, turn, turn.” Just shift gears and keep on keepin’ on, no matter what.
Time to spend a little time plotting your career. Focus on a plan using these twelve tips as a springboard!
