Look and Act Like a Pro

I go to a lot of writing conferences and it’s easy to see who’s taking their writing seriously and who’s not. I would encourage you to look like a pro, even if you’re not. This starts with what I call “Personal Professionalism.” You’ve got to act as if you’re on the fast track to publication, even if you’re not quite there yet.

How do you do that?

When you’re at a conference, you dress the part. Wear appropriate clothing. Make sure your hair is tidy. Polish your pitch, so that you have the best possible chance when you finally get a few minutes with that editor or agent. This personal professionalism rolls over to other areas, too. Make sure you have a professional website, one that will wow potential editors/agents and readers.

It's Not Just Physical

Your professional appearance should also spill over onto your business cards and one-sheet. Remember, you want to stay true to your brand, so make sure your clothing/business cards/one-sheet and so on truly reflect your personality and your brand. You need to be confident and assertive, but not aggressive. Nothing will get on an editor’s nerves quicker than a know-it-all author who insists on acting like a diva. Be kind and considerate, and express your gratitude often.
