There’s Just Something About Soup

When the temperatures drop (or when we wish they would here in Texas), nothing hits the spot quite like a bowl of cozy soup. It’s more than a meal—it’s comfort in a bowl. The aroma fills the kitchen, steam fogs up the windows, and suddenly life feels just a little simpler, a little sweeter.

I’m going to be honest: I’m a soup fanatic. I love to bake, but when it comes to savory foods, I most often turn to soups. They’re simple, work perfectly when you like to prep meals in advance (which I do), and oh, so hearty! Best of all, they’re delicious, and so versatile.

To me, soup feels like an invitation for people to gather, and to spend quality time together. Pair it with warm bread and you’ve got the makings of a perfect evening.

Cozy Recipes for Fall Nights

Here are a few of my favorite soups and breads for chilly evenings (or for those of us pretending it’s chilly, even when it’s not!):

Serve one of these with a side salad and you’ve got dinner on the table in no time.

A Devotional Thought on Gratitude

When I think about soup simmering on the stove, I’m reminded of how often in Scripture meals are linked to fellowship. Acts 2:46 tells us: “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.”

Sharing a meal—even a simple one—gives us the chance to slow down, breathe, and give thanks. Gratitude doesn’t have to be reserved for the big moments; it can be stirred up in the quiet, ordinary ones, too.

Pair It with a Good Mystery

And since no cozy night is complete without a story, might I suggest curling up with my Little Red Truck Mysteries? These small-town adventures mix faith, family, and a dash of sleuthing—the perfect book to pair with a warm bowl of soup and fresh bread.

An Invitation to You

This week, why not plan a Soup & Story Night of your own? Pick a recipe, bake a loaf of bread, gather your family (or just a cozy blanket), and curl up with a good book. You might find that what fills you isn’t just the food, but the gratitude that bubbles up along the way.

Much love,

Janice
