What type of blog will you build? The possibilities are endless! With that in mind, let's look at some popular ones.
POPULAR BLOG NICHES:
“A blog niche is a specialized topic area that you’ll be focusing on when writing content. Blogging niches allow you to narrow down your audience and craft content that is much more relevant for them.”

Examples include:
- Finance/business
- Marketing/sales
- Design and development/Technology
- Education
- News
- Entertainment
- Travel
- Food and drink
- Beauty and fashion
- Health and fitness
- Lifestyle and hobbies
- Pets
CHOOSE A DOMAIN NAME:
Come up with a domain name that works for you. I bought mine from godaddy.com. If you’re doing a recipe blog think long-term, not just what you want to post now. “Southern” sells well. Baked goods are a big hit. The more “simple, easy, 3-ingredient” style posting you can do, the more of a crowd you’ll draw.
WORDPRESS BLOG:
Create a wordpress blog. Do NOT use wordpress.com. Instead, use wordpress.org.
You can build yourself or hire someone to build it out for you.
HOSTING:
You will need a hosting company. To save yourself headaches later on (in the monetization process) I highly recommend https://www.bigscoots.com. There will be some cost involved but you will more than make this back later if your blog is monetized. BigScoots and Mediavine (the ad company) play nicely together, which will eliminate problems later on. Note: If you’re already with another host, don’t change right away. Go ahead and build your sessions with the current host and then trade out when you’re closer to the monetization goal.
DESIGN YOUR SITE:
Hire a pro or do it yourself. There are templates within WordPress. If you want to eventually be monetized with Mediavine eventually you’ll need to use Mediavine Trellis templates. There’s a one-time fee for these.
PLUG-INS:
- Mailchimp (or other mailer)
- Google Analytics
- Grow Social (by Mediavine) to connect to social media accounts
- Google Site Kit (Search Console)
- WooCommerce (if you’re planning to sell product)
- Yoast SEO
LAYOUT OF YOUR BLOG:
- Landing Page (that matches your brand)
- Featured Post (can change seasonally)
- Drop-Down Menu (build as you go)
- About the Author (place a blurb on every page)
- Drop-down to other pertinent sites (like your author website)
- Subscribe page (along with a pop-up)
- Search bar
